Start with the reason for replacement
Describe whether the window sticks, leaks air, has damaged glass or frames, or no longer operates as expected. If water enters around the window, ask the installer to distinguish the window assembly from surrounding sealing, drainage and foundation conditions before recommending the repair.
Check more than the outside dimensions
Two windows that fit the same rough opening can open differently and provide different usable clear openings. Request the proposed model’s specifications and have its suitability for the intended room use confirmed. Keeping the old opening does not establish compliance.
Know when the scope becomes larger
Deterioration around the frame, a needed opening enlargement, an unsuitable well or recurring water can add work beyond a window swap. Ask which conditions are included in the base quote and how newly discovered repairs would be authorized.
Written replacement quote checklist
- Manufacturer, model, operation and glazing details.
- Removal of the old window and treatment of the existing frame.
- Sealing, flashing or waterproofing details appropriate to the installation.
- Interior and exterior finish repairs and disposal.
- Separate product and labor warranty terms, exclusions and contact for service.
